The Best Indian Motorcycle Ever Produced
We are going to tell you all about the model 439, a four-cylinder, 78 cubic inch powerhouse built by Indian to master the roads all over America. At the Museum, as you can see in this video, has about 12 four-cylinder motorcycles, and the Indian 1939 four-cylinder is really the pinnacle of the Henderson Brothers' achievement and the Indian motorcycle cycle production at any point in their history. The model 439 combines all the best of what Indian had to offer.
The four-cylinder engine was bumped up in cubic inches to approximately 78 cubic inches, an inline four-cylinder with a three-speed transmission at the back. Major updates were made to the top end for the 1938 season. Initially, the cylinders were cast individually, creating a lot of heat with cast iron heads. In 1938, they began casting the cylinders in pairs for better cooling, and they switched to aluminum heads, dissipating heat much better than cast iron.
These bikes had tons of issues with heat, so these updates were crucial. The 1939 model retains the rigid rear end, making it a great sporting motorcycle for curves. With the classic Indian leaf spring front end, it's the pinnacle of that design as well. The four-cylinders make a unique sound, and Indian would produce them until 1942, with very limited production each year. The meticulous detailing of the design updates, such as the transition from individual cylinder casting to paired cylinders for better cooling, showcases the dedication of Indian to continuously improve their motorcycles. Furthermore, the decision to retain the rigid rear end for the 1939 model highlights the balance between sportiness and comfort, making it a desirable choice for enthusiasts.
The distinctive sound and smoothness of the four-cylinder engine provides a sensory experience, emphasizing the unique appeal of Indian motorcycles. It's evident that these machines hold a special place in motorcycle history, and the model 439 represents a culmination of innovation and tradition in American motorcycle manufacturing.
