Two-Wheeled, Self-Balancing Gyro-X Vehicle from 1967

The Gyro-X project originated in 1967, conceived by automotive designer Alex Tremulis and gyroscope expert Tom Summers. With an initial budget of $750,000 (equivalent to about $6 million today), the vehicle was intended to revolutionize transportation with its advanced balancing technology. Despite the innovative concept, the project faced financial difficulties leading to the bankruptcy of the Gyrocar Company. As a result, the development of Gyro-X was halted, and the vehicle's potential was left unrealized. Over the decades, the Gyro-X chassis underwent a tumultuous journey, including the loss of its critical gyroscope. Eventually, it found a new home at the Lane Motor Museum in Nashville. The museum undertook the task of restoring this rare vehicle, preserving its historical significance and showcasing the remarkable engineering that went into its creation.
